Now that the piled-up fall soccer season is drawing to a close, we’re beginning to put together our first winter veteran’s soccer division. For those of you who participated in first men’s Over-40 division last spring and summer, we’re hoping to expand our horizon’s and bring more people in and expand the age group offerings. ASL will start the process of recruiting and assembling teams in November with a proposed start the weekend of December 6 and 7. We’ve got a data base of about 600 people from the last 8 years of ASL and will be contacting everyone there by mail to invite them to join our group. AWSL is also at work putting their program together and plans to start play in Spring '09. If you’re interested in getting in their database pending their plans coming together, e-mail us at the address below and we’ll pass you on to them.
Marty Enright will again serve as Director of Player Personnel and Ambassador at Large to get everything organized.
We hope to be able to establish a year round operation, and obviously games in the winter months will depend on weather conditions from week to week. We’ve got a lot of options in the summer and somewhat less in the spring. Fall is always hectic because of the compressed high school season and the resources it absorbs.
We are planning to add 6 more lighted fields at the complex in Bernalillo, which will also expand our options. Obviously that’s a more attractive option when gas is $2.50 a gallon than when it’s $4.00 a gallon.
We hope to be able to expand our age grouping to operate both Over-40 and over-50 division and grow (with you) into being able to offer Over-60. The Santa Fe Adult Soccer League has a history of both oer-40 and over-50 play, so we think we can easily get enough people interested to get a dependable crew ourselves.
We’re targeting Saturday November 22 as a day to get people together to register, if you’re not already in ASL or AWSL, and play some short scrimmages for those who have been away from the game for a while to get their legs back under them prior to a visit to the chiropractor. We’re also working on a more creative approach to player registration for players who only player in the veteran’s division.
If you’ve got questions or want to get in the database for direct communications, please e-mail as at abqvetsoccer@gmail.com. That will keep you from getting lost in the normal League e-mail and let us directly contact you with updates as we move forward. And all of you know guys who used to play in the League in the “good old days.” Please pass word of this on to them and ask them to come back and get involved. We promise they won’t have to play against those young 37 year old horses.
